The World is Yours Strip
This was almost the perfect Aikida strip… dammit. Slightly obscure reference to a movie (lets face is, Scarface is old), some modern pop reference, and some general funny. But I think I botched the last panel, water is always always hard (for me) to pull off. I’ll maybe fix it later. I would say I am… 83% happy with the strip otherwise, and come on, who parodies Scarface? Huh? Come onnnn. We do obscure with style.
EDIT: I’ve fixed the last panel up a bit to at least give it the feel that they’re submerged in something. Slight improvement, far from optimal though.
Slow news day beyond all this. For everyone who has donated, again, thank you. I’ll start mailing the panels in bunches after the event is over. As I mentioned, the support thusfar has been nothing short of overwhelming.

The problem isn’t ripples or anything, its that they don’t look submerged. And that’s almost impossible to fix without redrawing and rescanning the panel. Shit.

I could tell what it was right away…. they do look submerged, but it’s gotta come up higher than that on the bodies for realistic floating… unless they’re in a shallow pool (like 3 inches) then it’s perfect.
If you really want it to look like water, don’t use dark lines for the ripples/waves… use really really light blue, like borderline white and then use actual white in the center. It’ll look like refracted overhead lights. you don’t need to make them any bigger than they are now, just don’t use black.

For submerging them, couldn’t you just do a bucket fill with some watercolour of less than 100% opacity? Of course, if they’re meant to be floating in the water, that wouldn’t work, since then they shouldn’t be covered by the water. Oh well, I saw it as a rug too, and when I read about “water” I wondered… wasn’t it blood they were leaking? ;)

Ah, one more thing to work on, and one more thing learned. Too bad, could have been a good strip if it had come out right. Water is the enemy, though to be fair, I’ve never worked with it before, with transparencies involved. Also remember things are not so easy to fix because a Wacom is not involved… panels have to be redrawn, and I’d rather just start thinking about Friday.

Good to hear it.. I think the part that I’m overthinking is that people who have actually seen the movie will get the joke, regardless of how poorly the last panel turned out. Good enough for me.

OK I saw the last panel and I didn’t even notice they were submerged in water, I just thought it was odd that the floor was blue. I fully expected more blood and bullet holes, but I’m guessing it’s some reference to Scarface which I don’t think I’ve ever seen, so I’m sure for some one it makes sense. I thought the comic was good though even not understanding the whole Scarface thing.

I saw the last scene (which the comic parodies), and I knew immediately that the blue portion was water, as well, it looks like water, and there was a pool / fountain dealie in Tony Montana’s ([entranceway?] wtf ever the french word for it is…) to his house.
